Chick McGeehan

Charles “Chick” McGeehan was an outstanding dual-sport athlete at the University of Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1969, upon which he served in the United States Army as a Special Services Officer. His military service included a tour in Chu Lai, Viet Nam where he was awarded a Bronze Star.

Returning to civilian life in 1972 he taught and coached at the Haverford School, a nonsectarian college preparatory day school for boys in Pennsylvania and then in 1980 embarked upon a 35 years of service at St. Martin’s Episcopal School in Metairie, Louisiana. St. Martin’s is a private co-ed school for grades early childhood through high school. Students benefit from a challenging academic program, fine and performing arts, competitive athletics, and a wide selection of extracurricular activities. St. Martin’s 18-acre campus is unlike any other in the New Orleans metropolitan area. Facilities include a chapel, two libraries, a 500-seat auditorium, a visual arts building, a student center, an indoor swimming pool, two full size gymnasiums, a lighted football field, and an all-weather track.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported in 2017 that “Chick” McGeehan was the recipient of St. Martin’s Episcopal School’s 2017 Dorothy Porter Service Award. The Head of School, Merry Sorrells, made the announcement and said, “McGeehan has been a longtime trusted employee. Over his 35-plus years of employment by and service to St. Martin’s, Chick has remained one of the most valued and beloved members of the school family,” she said. “Even in retirement, he can often be seen on campus serving as a substitute teacher and as the master of ceremonies on Grandparents’ Day. Chick inspires us with his boundless energy and continued service to St. Martin’s.”

  • McGeehan served in a variety of roles throughout his tenure at St. Martin’s before his retirement in 2012. As a coach, he achieved success in a variety of undertakings, and his range of talents enabled him to move from season to season with ease. Whatever the sport, McGeehan taught skills with expertise, worked well with male and female athletes, and enjoyed frequent successes with his teams, including state championships.
  • When the school was in need of an interim athletic director, McGeehan gave up the comfort and ease of retirement to serve in that role. He has continued to devote his time and talents to St. Martin’s in countless ways.

Chick and his wife Sandy are the parents of three children (Stacey McGeehan Ellefson, Kelly McGeehan, and Chip McGeehan) and four grandchildren (Chase, Lexi, Riley, and Reese Ellefson.
