Recruitment Stories
I remember Coach Rohe was never for a loss of words or something to say. During the summer before my senior year Pat Pomphrey and I were in Coach’s office talking about the summer track program when I asked Coach for more scholarship money. He just looked and me and said, “John you have a good scholarship.” Without even thinking, I came back with, “But, Coach, if better is even possible, good is not enough.” He just sat there, and Sharon, his secretary, almost fell over laughing. I did get a better scholarship. It was the only time I know of where Coach didn’t have anything to say. I also remember the beep-beep of his little mopped in the morning when making the loop around the river.
